MANHEIM, Pa. – Officials from Manheim Borough and Manheim Borough Authority officially broke ground this morning on a project estimated at $10 million to upgrade the authority’s wastewater treatment plant to meet requirements of the Chesapeake Bay Tributary Strategy. Representative Tom Creighton, Senator Mike Brubaker and Congressman Joe Pitts joined local officials at this morning’s event.
“The upgrades we are making to the authority’s wastewater treatment plan enable us to comply with the requirements of the Chesapeake Bay Tributary Strategy in a timely manner,” said Doug Snavely, chairman Manheim Borough Authority. “I am happy to see the project get underway.”
Manheim Borough Authority, which provides wastewater treatment services to approximately 2,300 residences and businesses in Manheim Borough and portions of Rapho Township in Lancaster County, secured a $4.3 million grant from the Commonwealth Finance Agency (CFA)—one of the largest CFA grants awarded in Lancaster County—for the upgrades. The authority anticipates plant upgrades to be complete by late 2010.
“Pennsylvania is doing its part to help improve water quality in the bay,” Snavely added, “and through these plant upgrades, the authority is doing its part, too.” According to DEP, the Susquehanna River and its tributaries account for 50% of freshwater flow to the Bay.
RETTEW Associates, Inc. provided grant administration services and is providing environmental consulting and construction phase services for the project. Gettle Inc. is providing electrical construction services and Wickersham Construction and Engineering Inc. is the general contractor for the project.
